Tetris Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

Each time a major honors show draws close, there’s always an outcry to include additional classifications to recognize unsung work and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.

Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
  • Another imaginative release missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked recently
  • Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often small games, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the hard edge of video game design, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
