Nepal's Electoral Scene Witnesses Significant Alliance Forged Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The September revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership

According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's established political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Taking Place

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several major political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
