The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
